Abstract

The study took a cursory survey of utilization and maintenance of school facilities for effective instructional delivery in colleges of education in north central states of Nigeria. Two research questions were raised and answered using meanwhile the standard deviation was used to determine the spread of the scores around the mean. A descriptive survey was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised of 14 colleges of education which include five federal and nine state owned colleges of education in north central states of Nigeria totaling 14 colleges of education with the total respondents of 61,641. Simple sampling by balloting was used in the selection of five states in North Central states of Nigeria. These states include Kogi, Plateau, Kwara, Niger and Nasarawa respectively. College of Education School Facilities Questionnaire (COESFQ) of a 30-item was used as the instrument for data collection. The reliability of the COESFQ was carried out on 60 staff (Outside the area of study), and their responses were analysed with the aid of Cronbach Alpha method which yielded a “reliability coefficient of 0.94 showing that the instrument is highly reliable for use. The services of four trained research assistants were employed in administration and retrieval of the questionnaires. The responses were collated and analyzed with aid of mean and standard deviation. From the analysis, it was revealed that the available facilitates are often and seldom utilized by lecturers and students from both federal and state colleges of education in north central states of Nigeria for effective instructional delivery. Also, the available facilities are maintained by lecturers and staff of works department from both federal and state colleges of education in north central states of Nigeria to a little extent and very little extent for effective instructional delivery. It was recommended that Administrators of colleges of education should organize conference, seminars, workshops and symposia for students, lecturers and staff of works department on proper utilization and maintenance of available facilities in the school.
