Abstract

Angiosperms are the main source and having abundant concentrations of bufadienolides. Urginea indica is one amongst this diverse group of bulb material having vital medicinal qualities. The bulbs of Urginea indica found to contain complex phytochemical constituents requiring advanced purification and characterization techniques. In the modern world, advanced analytical instruments play a key role in qualitative separation of multiple actives present in a single herbal. In this particular research has identified few of the novel bufadienolides present in the methanol bulb extracts of Urginea indica. Initially, a thick methanolic concentrate was prepared in cold extraction followed by evaporation in the rotary evaporator. This was followed by testing of the extract using advanced analytical tools to obtain clarity about the chemical structures of pharmaceutical importance. In our investigation greater emphasis is given to the isolation and characterization of highly potent and specific phytochemical constituents. Two active principles of bufadienolides namely Scillarenin and Scillaren-A were identified using analytical testing procedure like FT-IR and LC-MS. As per the literature survey both these compounds found to have different mechanism of action in treating human kind. Scillaren-A will be a boon in cardiac related problems whereas scillarenin for patients suffering from common cold and upper respiratory infections. We presume that the chemical database provided in the present investigation can serve as a platform and future scope for collection, extraction and isolation of Urginea indica bulbs.
